The Radio Mast Project
03-MAY-2006  Two led-like class bulbs Two giant sized LEDs ??? No. These are covers for the mast lights and they are made of quite thick glass. Here they are right after a thorough wash. They will not be that clean after collecting pollutants on top of the mast for some years. The other one has a small crack in the prism section.
03-MAY-2006  Lamp holders for mast lights. After sitting some 30 years on top of a mast the originally very intense red colour has faded. Also, the gasket rubber has lost all its elasticity and it must be replaced. Other than that the holders are in excellent condition.
06-MAY-2006  Mast sections lying around The three smaller sections that will be on top of the mast. The Finnish Civil Aviation Administration reguires them to have those colours. Each section weighs about 100 kilograms and is quite easy to move as needed.
06-MAY-2006  Closeup of a white mast section This is one of the three 4 meter long sections. It has just been painted with white Hammerlite paint. The paint is very sticky and has an awful scent in it. It cures rapidly and is supposed to withstand the harsh climate. Since the metal is galvanized the paint may loosen after a while.
06-MAY-2006  Closeup of a red mast section This is the red section. It was also just painted with red Miranol paint. I would have used the Hammerlite here as well but the local hardware store did not have that on stock. The paint takes a long time to cure but it also lacks that scent. Note that the vertical bars are NOT tubes but solid iron bars. This thing is really heavy. In the background You can see the attacment for guys. It is placed between the two top sections.
06-MAY-2006  Bottom section of the mast This is the bottom section of the mast. It is 9 meters long and weighs around 500 kilograms. Since it is galvanized and has never been painted there is no reason to do it now either. It is also wery laborous to move around so I decided to leave it au-naturel. As You may notice it is from a different mast so I have to make an attacment for the top sections. It will be a simple 10 millimeter thick plate with some holes in it. The rails in the background are a safety device for climber.
06-MAY-2006  Safety devices for the climber The climber should wear a vest which has a sliding attachment in this rail. If the climber starts to fall the attachment will jam and the worst that can happen is that the cliber hurts his nose. Very cheap life insurance.
06-MAY-2006  Attachment of the safety rail This is how the rail is attached in the mast. When You climb the rail is between Your legs.
